The Way to God

How To Know God Personally

Often we go along in our daily life, feeling good about ourselves, not worrying about our future. We might believe there is a God. We might even think we are going to go to heaven. We think we are on the right road to God.

But we might not really be on the right road. We may actually be on our way towards death. "What you think is the right road may lead to death" (Proverb 14:12).

If you were traveling down a road that had a bridge washed out, you would like someone to warn you. Well, we would like to warn you about danger up ahead.

The problem is that we are going our own way. We are like the husband who refuses to stop and ask for directions because he is sure he is going the right way. The Bible equates us to sheep that are going the wrong way: "All of us are like sheep that are lost, each of us going our own way" (Isaiah 53:6) And the way we are going may not be God's way at all!

My eyes were opened and I saw that I was in danger. The problems in our lives are directly related to sin. We often think of sin as being on a scale, with big sins and little sin. We think that there is a cut-off point, where if we don't do too many real bad things, we might go to heaven. But this is not how God sees sin. Any kind of sin separates us from God - "little sin" just as much as "big bad sins." Take quarreling and gossip for instance. The Bible lists them equally with what we think of as being "big sins." You see we usually compare ourselves to someone else and say I'm not as bad as that person. But, it shouldn't be the other person we compare ourselves to but rather to God who is perfect. Since imperfection (sin) cannot co-exist with perfection (God) we have a problem.  Since God looks at sin this way, we are "lost". Our sin separates us from God. God says in Isaiah 55:8,9, "My thoughts are not like your, and my ways are different than yours."

God is holy and cannot tolerate sin. He says, "It is your sins that separate you from God" (Isaiah 59:2). "Everyone has sinned and is far from God's saving presence" (Romans 3:23) God hasn't left us, we have separated ourselves for Him!

As a result of sin there is a great distance between God and us. We might be trying to get to God's side. We might know that good things are from God, but "your sins have kept these good things from you" (Jeremiah 5:25). We often think that our good morals and high standards and going to church are all we need to get to God's side. We think if we just do what is right, then we will be ok. We think, "If we do the best we can, that's all God expects of us."

But does having a good family, good attendance at church, or being baptized enough to get us to God's side? Isaiah 64:6 says, "Even our best actions are filthy through and through." Can we ever be good enough for God? No! So we are on our way to death. But there is more than physical death. Death isn't the end. There is a physical death but then the spiritual part of us lives on. The people we are will live forever - forever in heaven or forever in hell. "Everyone must die once, and after that be judged by God" (Heb 9:27)

Is there any hope at all? People are going to hell. "Those who reject God will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord" (2 Thessalonians 1:8,9).

The answer is in Christ Jesus

2000 years ago a child was born, more then just a human child, but rather, fully man, fully God, his name is Jesus. "For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life." (John 3:16). Not as some think, a good man, a prophet, a philosopher or even a god. You see if he was just a good man then he was the biggest liar that ever lived, because he called himself God. I would not believe a liar, so, either Jesus is who he said he was, God, or he is a liar.

Jesus died for our sins. "For Christ died for sins once and for all, on behalf of sinners, in order to lead you to God." (1 Peter 3:18). Jesus Christ is the way to God. "There is one God and there is One who brings God and mankind together, the man Christ Jesus who gave Himself to redeem mankind" (1 Timothy 2:5). Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one goes to the Father except by Me" (John 14:6). Romans 5:8-11 says that Jesus died in my place: "God has shown us how much He loves us; it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! By His death we are put right with God; how much more, then will we be saved by Him from God's anger! We were God's enemies, but He has made us His friends through the death of His Son. Now that we are God's friends, how much will we be saved by Christ's life."

As a result, we have a new life. We are different people. "When anyone is joined to Christ, he is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). There is new meaning for life. Jesus said, "I have come that you may have life - life in all its fullness" (John 10:10). Is your life FULL? Jesus said that if it isn't then something's wrong. It starts with a personal relationship with Jesus.

We become a part of God's family. He becomes our Father. John 1:12 says, "Some, however, did receive Him and believe in Him; so He gave them the right to become God's children."

If you want to receive Christ, then you can pray this prayer:

Jesus Christ, Thank You for loving me. I understand that I need You. I open my life to You and I receive you as my Lord and my Savior. I turn my back on my old style of life. And I want to follow You from now on. Make me to be the person that you want me to be. Thank you for forgiving me for my sins. Thank you for dying for my sins. I believe that You were raised from the dead. Thank you for coming into my life, and hearing this prayer according to your promise. AMEN.
